Gang war between rival families is set to erupt after hardman Kevin 'Gerbil' CarrollCarroll, 29, was shot dead by three masked gunmen

Gang war between rival families is set to erupt after hardman Carroll, 29, was shot dead by three masked gunmen in front of horrified women and children shoppers in the car park of a busy Asda supermarket in broad daylight. Now feared kingpin Jamie Daniel - whose daughter Kelly, 27, was Carroll's partner and has two children with him - is said to be plotting to take out those responsible for the chilling assassination. Gangland sources believe that Carroll was stitched up by one of his crooked associates before he was shot dead in cold blood as he sat in a black Audi in the Asda car park in Robroyston, Glasgow. Executed ... Kevin 'Gerbil' CarrollAnd it is understood furious Daniel KNOWS who killed Carroll - and it's said a hitman from Liverpool will be brought in to dish out vicious retribution. Last night one senior underworld figure - with close links to the Daniels clan - said: "The family know who killed The Gerbil and they are out for revenge. "There's been word that a hitman will be brought in from Liverpool to do their dirty work for them. "The father of Jamie's grandchildren has been executed - of course it is not finished. I imagine that this will be bloody and swift."The source added: "Within minutes of Carroll's death the Daniels knew who had pulled the trigger. "They also think that someone probably set him up to be killed and told his killers where to be.
Hunt for clues ... forensic team examine car Carroll was shot in"They even knew what seat he would be sitting in at the back of the Audi. There will be people sitting right now wondering when they are going to be hit. They know it is coming." Other hoods also believe Carroll was set up by one of his own. It is believed one of the hitmen was sitting in the supermarket sipping a coffee as he waited on Carroll to arrive in the car park. An insider said: "There is no doubt in their eyes that this was an inside job. "The killers knew exactly when and where he was going to be. "They were lying in wait for him - and could only have known from someone on the inside. "Carroll was extremely cautious and never took many risks. He has been stitched-up and there will be repercussions."Carroll grew up with the Daniel family in the tough Possil area of Glasgow.

Supermarket slaughter ... Carroll was executed by masked gunmen as he sat in black Audi outside Asda storeHe went from being a bit-part crook to a major player in the bitter feud between the Daniel and Lyons gangs. He survived a double shooting in East Dunbartonshire in November 2006 when shots were fired at him and a friend from a car.
However, a source said he had been getting "too big for his boots". The insider added: "Make no mistake, he IS respected by the Daniel family. "But there are many who think he has been dining out on the name too much. "He has been getting cockier and cockier and getting involved in more and more major deals.
"He was one of the major drugs players - mainly due to his connections to the Daniels. "No one is really surprised he has been killed. It has been coming for a while."Reclusive millionaire crime boss Daniel is constantly on the move and stays in a series of safe-houses in and around Glasgow. He also has two former soldiers protecting him by his side around the clock. Yesterday the fears of an upsurge in gang warfare sparked a plea in the Scottish Parliament for the Government to crack down on organised crime. Paul Martin, MSP for Glasgow Springburn, challenged SNP leader Alex Salmond during First Minister's Questions to act after the shooting in his constituency. The Labour MSP called on Mr Salmond to show leadership by standing up to gangland activities and requested a meeting with Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill to discuss action. Cops are still trying to track down the killers.
Last night a spokesman for Strathclyde Police refused to comment.
