Man stabbed to death for failing to respond to gang signs - NYPOST.com: "Two teen thugs slaughtered a Long Island youth after he failed to respond to their gang signs as he walked past, cops said yesterday.
Yunior Maldonado, 18, a pizza-parlor waiter from Westbury, was in an unfamiliar area of Hempstead on Nov. 14, the day before his birthday, when he encountered two reputed members of the 18th Street Gang.
'We believe they flashed gang signs,' said Detective Sgt. John DeMartinis of the Nassau County Homicide Squad. 'We believe there was a verbal confrontation and then the victim was chased down and killed.'
Suspects Pedro Santos, 17, and Yan Cifuentes, 15, allegedly showed him no mercy.
'They caught him and stabbed him to death while he was pleading for his life,' said Detective Lt. John Azzata.
Maldonado was pronounced dead at 11:58 p.m., two minutes shy of his 19th birthday."
