Quebec street gang leader Ducarme Joseph, freed from jail earlier this month after he was arrested for a probation violation, won’t be losing his lavish stone mansion on the West Island of Montreal for failing to pay his property taxes.

An unnamed person paid a whopping $28,845 property tax bill on Joseph’s two-storey home at 64 Radisson St. in Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Que., just before the payment deadline.

Had the taxes remained unpaid, Dollard city officials would have seized and sold the home at public auction.

A City of Dollard-des-Ormeaux tax department employee said Friday she could not say who paid the tax bill or whether it was paid in cash or cheque.

“We don’t disclose that kind of information,” the city official said.

Joseph, who survived an assassination attempt on his life this spring, bought the home for $1,350,000 in 2008. He quickly became the man with the largest unpaid tax bill in Dollard, according to a list of homeowners with unpaid taxes.

QMI Agency revealed this fall that Joseph put the six-bedroom, lavishly furnished mansion on the market this fall with an asking price of $1,600,000 while he was in jail. It remains for sale.

Further investigation found that HSBC Bank Canada had extended a massive amount of credit to Joseph despite the gangster’s lengthy criminal history of drug trafficking, physical assaults, and gun violence.

An HSBC Canada branch in St. Leonard, Que., not only gave Joseph the $1,275,000 mortgage, but also provided a $25,000 line of credit and a MasterCard with a $10,000 limit.

Though Joseph’s crime career includes a case where he pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting and forcing a 12-year old girl into prostitution, HSBC declined to explain its dealings with him.
