9 alleged Sur 13 gang members agree to plead guilty; 4 others will go to trial: "Nine alleged local members of the Latino street gang Sur 13 have now agreed to plead guilty to racketeering charges brought against them by the state Attorney General's office, while four others have decided to go to trial.
Roberto Trejo, 21, today became the fourth to reject the state's plea offer, deciding to face trial rather than agree to a 15-year prison sentence.
'He wants to exercise his right to go to trial,' said his attorney, Kristi Hanrahan.
All the accused are facing charges under Florida's racketeering statute, originally created to investigate mobsters but has increasingly used against street gangs.
The accused members were reportedly operating in the Westgate neighborhood west of West Palm Beach. Most were arrested in December 2007, the first targets of a statewide grand jury against gangs.
Those facing trial include: Trejo, Isais Jacobo, Victor Castillo and Jose Sanchez.
Those who have accepted plea deals include: Ernesto Campos, the alleged ringleader; Enrique Medrano ; Alexis Medrano ; Dennis Medrano ; Kevin Medrano ; Efran Ortiz ; Carlos Martinez ; Ronald Schupe and Hugo Gonzales ."
