Notorious Shakir, wanted in over two dozen criminal cases in Uttar Pradesh, was killed in a shootout with policemen in Muzaffarnagar district Monday that left a constable injured, officials said. The exchange of fire took place in Mandi area of Muzaffarnagar, around 350 km from here, when the police laid a trap to nab Shakir.
“We received information that two motorcycle-borne criminals were moving towards the city and accordingly, we laid a trap in the area at around 12 p.m.,” Inspector Ajit Singh of the Civil Lines police station told IANS over telephone.When challenged, the duo opened fire and one of them, later identified as Shakir, was critically injured in the ambush, he added. Shakir died while he was being taken to hospital.
“The other criminal managed to escape and we are trying to nab him. One of our constables, Shiv Kumar, received a bullet injury in his hand and has suffered a fracture. He is being operated upon and is out of danger,” Singh said.
Shakir, a native of Meerut district, had over two dozen criminal cases registered against him in various neighbouring districts.
