42-year-old man was shot and mauled to death just hours after the start of the new year when he stepped in to stop a brawl between warring teenagers in Manila.
The melee also left a 16-year-old youth leader wounded after he was hit by a stray bullet.Leoncio Miranda, a resident of A. Tejeron Street in Barangay 792, Sta. Ana, Manila, was declared dead on arrival at the Philippine General Hospital due to a bullet wound in the head. His body also bore bruises and cuts from the beating he took from his attackers. On other hand, Isaiah Andre Piedad, the Sangguniang Kabataan chair of Barangay 793, remained under observation in the same hospital for a bullet wound in the arm.Police said they were looking for a 17-year-old boy who reportedly shot Miranda and two other men identified as Joshua Ortiz and an alias Aton, all residents of Dayang Street in Barangay 793, who escaped after the incident.
Based on reports from the Manila Police District homicide section, two groups of teenagers from Barangays 792 and 793 clashed in front of a gasoline station at the corner of A. Tejeron and Pedro Gil Streets at 3:50 a.m. yesterday.SPO2 Dennis Javier said witnesses told the police that Miranda, a bystander, tried to stop one of the teenagers from strangling a member of the rival gang. His action, however, drew the ire of the other group who thought he was siding with their enemies, Javier said.
At this point, the 17-year-old shot Miranda in the head with a sumpak (improvised shotgun) while Ortiz and Aton took turns beating up the victim, the police investigator added.Piedad, meanwhile, was buying load for his cell phone from a nearby bakery when he was hit by a stray bullet.
Javier said members of the rival gangs fled when barangay watchmen and policemen arrived on the scene to break up the fight.
