Arrested are alleged members of the Montreal street gang known as "les bleus" or the Blues. According to the Montreal police, about 20 major gangs operate within Montreal and are split into two distinct groups, the Reds and the Blues. They count between 300 and 500 members, police say.About 700 officers from Montreal, the provincial Sûreté du Québec and several suburban forces carried out the sweep, dubbed Operation Axe, in dozens of locations.Police launched a major sweep against outlaw bikers and street gangs in Montreal and surrounding areas Thursday morning.
In all police expect to make about 60 arrests by the end of the day. Those arrested are expected to face drug trafficking and gang-related charges.They are targeting groups that act as intermediaries between criminal biker organizations and street gangs. They are alleged to be involved in the drug trade, particularly cocaine.
"This is a major operation to destabilize a criminal organization," Montreal police spokesman Laurent Gingras said.Some of those targeted were not hard to find, since they were already incarcerated at Kingston Penitentiary. Despite their imprisonment, they are alleged to have remained active in criminal activities.
Reports named a jailed biker, who is a onetime associate of Hells Angels boss Maurice "Mom" Boucher, as among those arrested at Kingston Penitentiary. The man was arrested during the massive anti-biker police crackdown in Quebec
