Neds ‘worship’ the knifemen | The Sun |Home Scotland|Scottish News: "GANG thugs who use knives on rivals in bloody street battles earn more 'respect' from pals, a shocking report revealed yesterday.
The blade merchants are idolised by awestruck peers who believe carrying a weapon is not enough alone to make them a leader.
The study also found teens caught up in gang warfare will use any 'chib' they can get their hands on - from Stanley blades and swords to broken bottles, screwdrivers and sharpened golf clubs.
Around 100 gang members in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee and West Dunbartonshire were quizzed for the research. The report said: 'Those that simply carried a knife were not respected. Being prepared to, and being known to, use a knife garnered respect.'
Some of those questioned for the study - Troublesome Youth Groups, Gangs and Knife-Carrying in Scotland - reveal horrific experiences. Jason, 24, of Glasgow, said: 'I stabbed someone in the chest. He made a big 'whoop', a big explosion of noise. It must've been his lungs popping.'
Gang yob George, of West Dunbartonshire, added: 'I've been stabbed three times and I'm only 14.'
And Will, 21, of Aberdeen, said: 'It's either stab or be stabbed. Kill or be killed.'
The report estimates there are around 300 youth gangs in Scotland with around 30 to 60 members - and it found 'violent group behaviour was regarded as a normal part of growing up'.
