Gang member admits shooting 16-year-old girl; will be sent to prison for at least 25 years - San Jose Mercury News: "19-year-old admitted gang leader pleaded no contest this week to attempted murder in the shooting of a 16-year-old girl last year that left her blind in her left eye and prone to seizures.
Lam Vo, who will turn 20 a week before he is sentenced next year, agreed to a deal that will send him to prison for 25 years to life for shooting at the girl as she rode in a car with three friends.
In addition to pleading no contest to attempted murder, Vo also pleaded no contest to using a firearm during the crime and committing the crime to further the activities of a gang.
'It was a fair resolution to the case,' said deputy district attorney Christy Bowles. 'He took responsibility for the crime and the victim and her family are pleased.'
Vo was originally charged with three counts of attempted murder.
The shooting occurred at 1:26 a.m. Aug. 1, 2009, in the 1600 block of 35th Avenue in East Oakland. According to police, the victim was sitting in a car at a traffic light with three friends when Vo walked up and shot into the car."
