THE cruel and vicious ‘sport’ of dog fighting has reared its ugly head in Namibia
Informante: "THE cruel and vicious ‘sport’ of dog fighting has reared its ugly head in Namibia where it has been revealed that pitbulls as well as other large guard dogs are being bred and sold for high prices for the ring. With large sums of money changing hands over these bloodthirsty dog fights, unscrupulous fight handlers are exploiting and mistreating these dogs that are subjected to the cruellest living conditions and ultimate death for the sole purpose of entertaining gamblers.
The SPCA has launched a nationwide appeal to Namibians to nip this barbaric sport in the bud, after a breakthrough last month, when a number of injured fighting pitbulls were confiscated by the Walvis Bay SPCA in collaboration with the police.
They are trying to flush out the active underworld gangs who are setting up the illegal dog fights, many of which are being held in Oshakati, where dog fighting is said to be growing into a thriving business.
The matter surfaced when a caged pitbull riddled with gaping wounds, as well as numerous other dead fighting dogs were reported to the SPCA at the home of a certain ‘Gariep’ Noble (jnr), who lives behind the Walvis Bay Police Station.
The SPCA received complaints from a neighbour who had spotted one of the dogs in a cage with its ears hacked off and its body covered in multiple injuries. The dog was being tormented with sticks and other objects when the report was made.
The constant monitoring of the situation by the SPCA only revealed more horror stories, and after months of perseverance and support from the Walvis Bay police and the Municipality, they swooped down and confiscated three traumatised and badly wounded dogs on October 27. Two of the three were injured badly with gaping bite marks and were taken to the vet for immediate attention."
