Pop star singer Bruno Mars' publicized cocaine possession case
Pop star singer Bruno Mars' publicized cocaine possession case, which stems from a September Las Vegas arrest, has hit a bump in the road to resolution.
According to reports, Mars' case has been delayed through mid-December.
The 25-year-old singer's trial, originally scheduled to take place yesterday (Nov. 18) in Las Vegas, has been postponed, according to attorney David Chesnoff. Mars--born Peter Hernandez--was accused of possessing 2.6 grams of cocaine when he was arrested following a Sept. 19 performance at a Vegas nightspot. He could face up to four years in prison if convicted on the controlled substance charge. Still riding the success of his hit single "Just The Way You Are," the Hawaii native is due back in court Dec. 14. (VIBE)
The singer faces up to four years behind bars if convicted.
Mars has been formally charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, a spokesperson for the Las Vegas district attorney's office tells EW. Mars is due back in court Nov. 18. If he is convicted, potential punishment for this charge could include one to four years in prison and/or a fine of up to $5,000 -- but if the singer has no prior convictions, Nevada law dictates that any such sentence would be automatically suspended and he would be put on probation instead. A statement from his label, Elektra Records, was later released.
"We congratulate Bruno Mars on his chart topping success, and provide him with our full love and support." (Statement)
Details on his arrest originally hit the Internet in mid-September.
Mars was arrested around 1:50 a.m. at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino -- where he had performed earlier in the night -- for felony possession of 2.6 grams of a "white powdery substance" that tested positive as cocaine. According to the report, a bathroom attendant approached a security officer at the facility to say that there was a man in a bathroom stall who might be using drugs, telling the guard that a male in the bathroom was "taking a really long time." The attendant said he observed the suspect in a striped shirt with a "baggy of white powder substance." The attendant and the security guard approached the suspect as he exited the stall, and the guard ordered Mars to hand over whatever narcotics he had on him. "This is when Hernandez, with his left hand, pulled out a white powder substance, which was consistent with cocaine, from his left-front jeans pocket." (MTV)
No further details have been released as of now.
