Interstate 90/39 shootings connected to fatal Tomah shooting

The drive-by shootings of a rural Edgerton woman, two Janesville apartments and several buildings along Interstate 90/39 are likely related to the fatal shootout involving Tomah police two days later, officials said Tuesday.

Seth M. McCloskey, 28, died in a shooting with Tomah police Friday, according to the Tomah Police Department. He had an Ohio driver’s license.

McCloskey also is suspected of firing shots from a vehicle on I-90/39 on Wednesday while traveling south from Dane County to Rock County to Illinois, Janesville Police Lt. Tim Hiers said.

In the Tomah shooting, officers stopped a vehicle Friday night in connection with a drive-by shooting earlier in the day. McCloskey exited the vehicle and shot toward police. One Tomah officer was struck before officers returned fire.

Law enforcement then approached the vehicle and found McCloskey dead.

The injured officer, Josh Kenworthy, was released from a La Crosse hospital Monday after being treated for a gunshot wound to his foot.

In the I-90/39 shootings, bullets recovered inside two Janesville apartments at 2940 Carrousel Lane are consistent with bullets in the Tomah shooting, Hiers said.

The bullets were described as similar to .40-caliber rounds with full metal jackets. They will be tested at the Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory for a possible match, Hiers said.

Witnesses described the vehicle in both the Tomah and I-90/39 shootings as a red pickup truck, officials said.

More evidence is needed to confirm whether the Tomah and I-90/39 shootings are related, according to the Dane County Sheriff’s Office.

McCloskey had a criminal history throughout the United States, according to the Tomah Police Department.

The Janesville shooting was part of several shootings Wednesday from a vehicle on I-90/39, officials said.

Christine A. Hudson, 50, of Albion Township was shot while inside her home along Goede Road in Dane County, officials said. The bullet went through her door and couch before striking her.

Hudson was treated for injuries at a local hospital, officials said.

Three homes were struck along I-90/39 near Rockford, Ill., officials said. Three shots also were fired in Loves Park, Ill., hitting businesses.

Winnebago County, Ill., Sheriff’s Deputy Chief Dominic Iasparro said agencies from Illinois to Tomah are working together on the investigation.
